Art Capitals Tour (Kyushu to Kyoto)
This tour begins in Hakata, part of Fukuoka, the capital of Fukuoka Prefecture on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu. With an international airport located conveniently close to the city it is an ideal entry into Japan. Off the normal tourist route it provides a less crowded atmosphere to enjoy your start to a cultural tour of Japan. Nearby Dazaifu city played such an important role in Japan from the seventh century onwards it was known as the ‘Western Capital’- its role was as a hub for culture and politics. Fukuoka is home to important Zen Buddhist temples, Shintō shrines and cutting edge modern and historical art museums. Whilst here we will also enjoy an overnight stay at the mountain hot springs resort of Yufuin.
Travelling from Hakata Station in Fukuoka we will make our way by the bullet train back to Kyoto along the way stopping at Hiroshima to visit the nearby Simose Art Museum, designated the “World’s Most Beautiful Museum”. Our next stop will be Fukuyama with its impressive castle and Shinshoji Zen Museum and Gardens. After travelling from Fukuyama to Kyoto we will spend the afternoon visiting the Okazaki district to enjoy the newly renovated building and art collection at the Kyocera Art Museum. On our final day we will travel from Kyoto to Osaka where we will visit one of Japan's newest and most important art museums the Nakanoshima Art Museum.
